Who is Moavero Milanesi?

Yesterday's post reported that the Representatives of the Governments of the Member States have appointed Enzo Moavero Milanesi Judge to the Court of First Instance (shown here on a 2004 picture together with Princess Mathilde of Belgium). But who is Mr. Enzo Moavero Milanesi? A small biography.

Enzo Moavero Milanesi was born 17 August 1954, is Italian, married, and has three children. In 1977, he finished his degree in law (maxima cum laude), at the La Sapienza University of Rome.

He also earned a certificate in Community Law of the
College of Europe in Bruges in 1982 and a Certificate of the Academy of American and International Law (University of Texas at Dallas), in 1983.

Between 1977 and 1979 he was Lieutenant of the Guardia di Finanza, a special police force mainly aimed at countering tax evasion and elusion, and preventing and prosecuting economic-financial violations. He was awarded the so-called encomio solenne (mention in dispatches).

In 1979, he became an Attorney at an international law firm in Rome, but he quickly turned his eye towards Europe. From 1983 onwards, he held several positions mainly at the European Commission, starting as case handler at the Directorate General for Competition. He inter alia held the position of Head of Cabinet of the Vice President of the European Commission in charge of Research, Telecommunications and Information technologies, Head of Cabinet of the member of the European Commission in charge of Competition, and as Antitrust Service Director.

He also wrote several articles and a total of three books (on Merger control regulation , EU law and policies, and EU Competition Law).

In 2002, he became Deputy Secretary-General of the Commission - the institution's second-highest ranking civil servant - with special responsibility for Directorates A, B, C and. G.

As already mentioned in the previous post, he was only last year appointed Director General of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers. And, as also mentioned yesterday, he will now soon be the newest member of the Court of First Instance, which he will be from "from the date of his swearing" until 6 October 2012.
